A first-year PhD student is told by one committee member to 'state your hypothesis' and by another, on the same draft, to 'sharpen your thesis statement,' and the paper only has a research question written down so far. 'How do first-generation students describe the transition to university-level academic writing' does not predict an answer; it commits the researcher to finding out, usually through interviews, surveys, or observation, and reporting what was actually there. A hypothesis predicts a specific, testable outcome that can be confirmed or denied when data are collected. Like, 'Students who complete a structured writing-transition programme will report lower academic-stress scores at the end of week six than students who don't complete it.' This statement can't be answered with a simple yes or no, as would a question, but can only be confirmed or disproved by the data. As such, it's a hypothesis. One combination is never valid: a quantitative, experimental study with a testable prediction available in advance and no hypothesis written down. Leaving the hypothesis out hides a prediction the researcher clearly already had, since the study design itself reveals what outcome was expected.

A Qualitative Study Without a Hypothesis Is Not a Weaker Study

Plenty of strong qualitative studies never state a hypothesis, and reviewers who expect one anyway are applying the wrong standard, not identifying a real gap. 'How do hospice nurses describe emotional exhaustion after a patient's death' has nothing to predict in advance; the entire point is to describe and understand a phenomenon closely enough that categories emerge from what people actually say. Demanding a hypothesis here would ask the researcher to claim, before a single interview, what participants would tell them.

A qualitative proposal with no hypothesis is not missing anything. It has the correct shape for a question about description and meaning rather than prediction, and treating it as unfinished quantitative work misreads what the method is for.

Signs You Have Conflated the Three

A handful of tells show up reliably once a question, a hypothesis, and a thesis have gotten mixed together in the same draft, and each one is fixable in a single sentence once you can name it.

  • A hypothesis you cannot imagine failing is an assumption stated with confidence, not a prediction. State the version that could turn out false.
  • A thesis statement that ends with a question mark has not been written yet. Answer the question, then state the answer as a claim.
  • A research question containing the word 'prove' is asking you to defend a conclusion you have already reached, not investigate one you have not.
  • A hypothesis with no comparison built into it, such as 'social media use affects wellbeing' rather than 'affects wellbeing more than X does,' cannot be tested against data at all.

Deciding Which One Your Paper Actually Needs

The fastest way to check is to ask what you are actually prepared to do: investigate without knowing the answer, predict a specific outcome and test it, or argue a position from existing evidence.
