A .bib file only prints what it is given

LaTeX never reads your references directly; it reads the .bib file, and a separate style file decides how each field is arranged, punctuated and italicized on the page. That division is powerful and unforgiving at once: a mistyped volume number or an unprotected capital letter is not a formatting slip, it is bad data, and a style file will reproduce it faithfully in every draft and every resubmission. Building an entry from the DOI's own registered record, the metadata the publisher deposited when the identifier was created, fixes the problem before it ever reaches a style file.

Two failures account for most broken .bib files. The first is a title losing its capitals, because a classic style lowercases everything past the first word unless told otherwise; bracing DNA and Bayesian after the first word stops that outright. The second is a key nobody can read six months later, temp1 or paper_final scattered through a growing bibliography. An author-year-word key such as shannon1948mathematical identifies its own paper on sight, inside a \cite command as much as inside the .bib file itself.

Plain-reference matching earns its place for the lists that never started life in BibTeX: a supervisor's Word document, an old paper's own bibliography, a set an AI assistant drafted. Matching runs at a strict threshold on purpose, so the result is either a genuine record or an honest not found, and a not-found entry is worth a second look, first for a typo, then through the AI citation checker if an AI tool produced the list in the first place.
