Why one passage produces three different counts

Word, character and sentence counts sound like the same kind of fact and are actually three separate measurements with three separate rules. A word count depends on how a tool decides where one word ends and the next begins: split on spaces alone and a hyphenated term like fine-tuned counts as one unit in some tools and two in others. A character count depends on whether spaces are included, which is exactly why this tool reports both figures side by side. A sentence count depends on how abbreviations and decimal points get told apart from a genuine full stop, since e.g. and 3.14 both contain a period that is not the end of anything. Microsoft Word, Google Docs and a journal's own submission system resolve each of these differently, which is the entire reason one paragraph can return three different totals.

Reading and speaking time are estimates layered on top of the raw count, not additional facts about the text. The reading figure here assumes 238 words a minute, the adult silent reading speed reported in a large meta-analysis of reading research; the speaking figure assumes 150 words a minute, a pace comfortable for a live presentation rather than a rushed one. Dense technical prose reads slower than either number, and a practiced speaker varies the pace on purpose, so both figures are a starting estimate to check a script against, not a deadline to hit exactly.

The count also describes rhythm once you look past the total. Average sentence length is the fastest signal: a paragraph where every sentence lands within a few words of the same length reads flatter than one that mixes short and long. A top-word list dominated by a single noun points at the same flatness from a different angle. Neither problem shows up in the headline number, which is why the detail stats sit right below it.
