Given-before-new ordering means a sentence opens with something the reader already has from the previous sentence, then adds the new part at the end, so each sentence hands the next one a foothold. A Better Test Than a Readability Score

A more useful test than any score is whether a colleague in an adjacent subfield, someone who knows the general area but not this specific method, can read a paragraph once and repeat back what it claims. If they can, the paragraph is doing its job regardless of what grade level a formula assigns it. If they cannot, the problem is almost always one of the three things above: a missing definition, a fact introduced before the reader has anywhere to put it, or two ideas crammed into one sentence. That single test catches problems a syllable count cannot: a term used two different ways in the same section, a sentence that quietly assumes background the reader does not have yet, or a paragraph that changes topic mid-stream without saying so.
