Citing Gemini: Google's tool through the manuals' rules
Gemini takes the same citation patterns the manuals wrote for generative AI, with Google in the company seat. APA puts Google in the author position, Gemini italicized as the title, the version in parentheses and a bracketed descriptor after it. MLA builds the entry around your prompt, with Gemini as the italicized container and Google as its publisher. Chicago cites the exchange in a footnote, model first, prompt quoted, full date last, and keeps the bibliography clean of it.
Two details are specific to Google's tool. First, the version selector distinguishes Flash from Pro tiers, and the difference is not cosmetic: they can answer the same prompt differently, so the tier and number belong in the citation. Second, the product used to be called Bard, and a citation records history rather than rewriting it: an exchange from 2023 is cited under the name the tool carried on that date. Gemini also surfaces inside Google Docs and the rest of Workspace; the underlying model and company are unchanged, so the citation is too.
