Citing Gemini: Google's naming and its history
Gemini reaches people from more directions than most AI tools: its own chat interface, the assistant built into Android, and the identical models surfacing inside Docs, Gmail and the rest of Workspace. However the exchange happened, the citation rules do not change with the surface. Generative AI guidance from APA, MLA and Chicago, published in 2023, was drafted broadly enough to cover any such tool, so applying it to Gemini needs no adjustment: Google occupies the author slot under APA, the prompt becomes the title under MLA, and Chicago limits the whole matter to a single footnote.
Two details are particular to this product. Google carried it under the name Bard for its first year, switching to Gemini in February 2024; what a citation records is the label the tool wore at the time, which is why exchanges from before the switch stay attributed to Bard while everything since keeps the Gemini name. The other detail is how versions are labeled: Google's naming pairs a capability tier with a generation number, Flash built for speed and Pro for depth, both currently at generation 2.5, and because the two tiers can answer one prompt quite differently, a reader reconstructing your work needs the full label rather than the product name alone.
The wider rules are the same ones that apply to any AI tool.
